How Often Should You Really Wash Your Bedding?

Spoiler Alert – it’s more often than you think. Keeping your bedding fresh isn’t just about comfort. It helps reduce allergens, dust mites, and unwanted odors. Here’s a quick guide to how often you should launder each layer of your sleep setup.

1. Sheets and Pillowcases

Recommended frequency: once a week

Your sheets and pillowcases are in direct contact with your skin every night. Oils, sweat, dead skin cells, and even makeup build up fast. Washing them weekly helps:

  • Keep allergens at bay

  • Prevent breakouts and skin irritation

  • Maintain a fresh, inviting bed

Tip: Rotate two or three full sets of sheets. That way you always have clean linens while others are in the wash.

2. Duvet Covers and Shams

Recommended frequency: every two weeks

Your duvet cover protects the comforter inside and can collect dust, skin cells, and occasional spills. Washing it biweekly ensures your top layer stays clean without overworking your machine.

3. Blankets and Comforters

Recommended frequency: once a month

Blankets and comforters get less frequent contact than sheets but still trap dust and allergens over time. A monthly wash keeps them fresh and extends their lifespan. Always check care labels—some may need gentle cycles or line drying.

4. Pillows and Pillow Protectors

Pillow Protectors: wash once a month

Pillows: wash every three to six months

Pillow protectors block sweat and oils from reaching the pillow itself. Wash them monthly. For your pillows, follow care instructions closely—many synthetic or down pillows can be machine washed and dried on low heat every few months.

5. Mattress Pads and Toppers

Recommended frequency: once a month

If you use a mattress pad or topper, it deserves attention too. Toss it in the wash each month to prevent dust mite buildup and keep your sleep surface hygienic.
